On March 15, Cupertino city staff including Safe-Routes-2-School (SR2S) program coordinator Chelsea Biklen and Alta Planning staff Lola Torney and Carlos Valadao came to Stevens Creek Elementary to conduct a “Walk-Audit” during morning drop off time. Principal Diane Prystas and several parent volunteers joined the team to collect traffic safety observations around key areas of the school and surrounding neighborhood. After a brief preparation meeting, each team member was assigned to a certain area to observe the traffic flow of cars, pedestrians, and bicyclists from 8:45am to 9:05am. With these findings, Alta Planning will provide an audit report to the city including recommendations that both the city and school can make to improve traffic safety around the school. The walk audit served as our first engagement with the newly created Safe Routes 2 School program. Please look for Chelsea at the upcoming Open House at Stevens Creek Elementary and help assist her in completing a safe routes mapping.
