Brightly-colored whimsical objects and animals are popping up around Cupertino! A 15-ft orange and yellow shark is sunning itself in Memorial Park, a 12-ft blue and orange salmon has appeared at Wilson Park, a bright yellow wagon wheel rolled in at McClellan Ranch, two interlocking blue and green chat bubbles have shown up next to the Library Field at City Center and two more fun designs are on the way. Have you seen them all?
The Rotary Club of Cupertino is installing artistic bike racks in six locations around the city, in a public-private partnership with the City of Cupertino. The racks are “functional art” meant to beautify our public spaces, offer interactive fun, and provide a convenient and safe place to lock up your bike.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Cupertino for this fantastic initiative and to the hard working Rotarians who are spending hours in the hot sun digging holes, pouring concrete, lifting heavy racks, and bolting them into the concrete foundations. Walk Bike Cupertino contributed to the project by scouting city parks and streets to identify the best locations and multiple Walk Bike board members have volunteered to help install the racks, including Bike Ped Commissioner Joel Wolf.
This project is the brainchild of our very own Seema Lindskog, Chair of Walk Bike Cupertino. She is the Cupertino Rotary Project Lead who has coordinated this effort with the City of Cupertino for the past two years. We’re excited and grateful to be part of the team that has brought this project to life!
Wagon Wheel at McClellan Ranch
The wagon wheel is next to the milk barn at McClellan Ranch. It makes a nod to the history of the ranch in a fun and playful design. It’s bright yellow and silver grey colors pop against the brick red of the milk barn. Its central location make it easily visible from all the surrounding buildings.

Chat Bubbles at Library Field
Library Field is a great place to have a lazy afternoon picnic or catch up on the latest news while watching your kids play cricket. The chat bubbles bike rack is right next to the field and offers residents a safe and convenient place to lock up their bikes when they come, and be able to keep an eye on them from anywhere on the field.

Salmon at Wilson Park
For families with active kids, Wilson Park is the perfect place to spend a few fun hours. From the playgrounds for all ages to the baseball fields, the Ceramics Center, the basketball court, and the wide open green lawn, there’s something for everyone.
In the middle of the park, between the playgrounds and the open lawn, now sits a big blue and orange salmon, ready to hold all your kids’ bikes safe while they play.

Shark at Memorial Park
A 15ft-long bright orange and yellow shark just swam in to Memorial Park! It’s under a shady tree, close to the Gazebo, in a central location that is clearly visible if you are attending an event at the Amphitheater. Next time you come for Movies in the Park or a Shakespeare play, ride your bikes and park them safely with the shark!

More Bike Racks to Come
Two more bike racks are in the process of being installed. If you see a group of Rotarians digging holes or pouring concrete somewhere in the city, you just got a glimpse of the future home of one of these bike racks. Be on the lookout for these fun and functional artistic installations!
