Following the November elections, the new Cupertino City Council was sworn in on December 12, 2024 at Cupertino Community Hall.

Walk Bike Cupertino (WBC) congratulates newly appointed Cupertino Mayor Liang Chao, newly re-elected and newly appointed Vice Mayor Kitty Moore, and newly elected City Council Member Ray Wang.

Walk-Bike Cupertino is looking forward to engaging and collaborating with all Councilmembers, as we believe that we are all united in wanting to advance the safety of Cupertino residents, cyclists and pedestrians alike.

Both Councilmembers Chao and Moore have already sent a strong signal for the safety of Cupertino’s residents by voting yes for the adoption of the Cupertino Vision Zero plan, for the SRTS Project of  the Lawson Middle School protected bike lanes, and for the Active Transportation Plan to be in this year’s city Work Program.

In her reply to our candidates survey, Vice Mayor Moore suggested some ideas we wholeheartedly approve of, such as increasing the number of pedestrian crossings with solar powered warning lights or carving out funding for a campaign “for bike lights, safety lights for pets, and people out at night, […] I see many people in dark clothes with no lights and we need to protect them.”. We look forward to the implementation of these measures in the next legislative period.

Mayor Chao did not stand for re-election in November and thus did not receive our election survey. However, back in 2018, she had rescinded her signature to a petition organized to support the Regnart Creek trail. We hope that the tremendous success of the Regnart Creek trail and her votes of the last two years will encourage her to support more of these projects, which are transformative for walking and biking in Cupertino.

While new Councilmember Wang did not reply to our candidate survey and did not make his positions on walking or biking public during the campaign, Walk Bike Cupertino looks forward to providing him with data points, anecdotes and community feedback to encourage him to support residents who walk and bike in our city.

Walk Bike Cupertino is looking forward to working with all Councilmembers to achieve our goals of safer and more enjoyable walking and biking for all ages and abilities in our City!
