The 10th Annual Silicon Valley Bike Summit August was held on Aug 6 & 7, this past week as a fully online event to allow participants to socially distance. It is the Bay Area area’s largest annual gathering of active transportation leaders and organizers – from government, the private sector, non-profits, and the general public.
There were engaging keynote speakers like Toks Omishakin, Caltrans Director and Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese. Panels discussed important topics such as Slow Streets, Equitable Approaches to Safe Routes to School Programs, and Rethinking the 5 “E’s: Equity in Active Transportation.
The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District announced the opening of a 0.7 mile trail connecting University Ave to the Ravenswood Open Space Preserve near East Palo Alto and Menlo Park.
This small but mighty little segment closed a long-standing gap to create 80 miles of contiguous San Francisco Bay Trail, running from Sunnyvale to Menlo Park and across the Dumbarton Bridge to the East Bay. Something to check out this weekend!
Two Walk Bike Cupertino Board members, Seema Lindskog and Jennifer Shearin, presented as part of a panel on Bringing Everyone to the (Virtual) Table: Outreach and Engagement. And as we mentioned in our previous newsletter, our very own Jennifer Shearin was named the SVBC 2020 Person of the Year for her work advocating for better walking and biking opportunities in Cupertino.
Professor Kevin Fang and SVBC conducted a study on cycling behavior and travel habits in the Bay Area which found that the farther cycling paths are from cars, the more residents are comfortable riding, among other good findings. Check out the full study for more interesting data points.
